About Dongyi Wu

Dongyi Wu is a Chinese-born artist currently based in Bakersville, North Carolina, United States. Working across wearable art, soft sculpture, and image-based practice, Wu creates body-related sculptural works that move between the body, wall, image, and space. Her practice grows out of fashion design, metalsmithing, and art jewelry, combining metal structures with fabric, found objects, recycled materials, and textile processes. Balancing volume and lightness, her works use the body as an activating structure rather than as a site of decoration.

Wu is currently an artist-in-residence at Penland School of Craft. She has recently completed artist residencies at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft in Houston, Texas; University of Arkansas at Little Rock in Little Rock, Arkansas; Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee; and Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Wu received her MFA in Metal and Jewelry Design from Rochester Institute of Technology in the United States, her BA in Jewelry Art Design from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology in China, and a dual degree in Fashion Design and Engineering from the same institution.

Wu’s work has been shown nationally and internationally, including at JOYA 2020 in Barcelona and Schmuck 2018 in Munich. In 2025, she presented her eighth solo exhibition, Golden Age, at Pratt Institute’s Steuben Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, during NYC Jewelry Week. Her work has been featured in New Brooches: 400+ Contemporary Jewellery Designs and Chinese Contemporary Jewelry Design. She was one of the winners of the Preziosa Young Design Competition 2020 in Italy, a finalist for the Lydon Emerging Artist Program Award in the United States in 2019, and a finalist for the ENJOIA’T Contemporary Jewellery Award in Spain in 2017.
